| Background | OR1J4 encodes an olfactory receptor belonging to the G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. Like other olfactory receptors, OR1J4 is located in the olfactory epithelium, where it interacts with odorant molecules to initiate a neuronal response leading to the perception of smell. It couples to G olf proteins, activating adenylyl cyclase and increasing cAMP, which triggers depolarization of olfactory sensory neurons. OR1J4 is part of a large gene family characterized by single-exon genes and 7-transmembrane domain structures. Beyond olfaction, some olfactory receptors (including OR1J4) are expressed in non-olfactory tissues, suggesting potential roles in cell signaling, migration, and metabolism. |
