| Background | CD8A, also known as CD8 alpha, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is primarily expressed on cytotoxic T lymphocytes and subsets of natural killer cells and dendritic cells. CD8A can form either an alpha-alpha homodimer or an alpha-beta heterodimer with CD8B. The CD8 coreceptor binds to major histocompatibility complex class I molecules and cooperates with the T-cell receptor to promote antigen recognition and T-cell activation. Its cytoplasmic region associates with the Src-family kinase LCK, facilitating intracellular signaling following T-cell receptor engagement. CD8A is widely used as a marker of cytotoxic T cells and is an important target in immunology, infectious disease, cancer immunology, and cell-therapy research. |
