| Background | CD5 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) superfamily. It contains three extracellular SRCR domains, a single transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic domain involved in intracellular signaling. CD5 is primarily expressed on T cells, thymocytes, and a subset of B cells. It functions as an immunoregulatory receptor that modulates T-cell receptor and B-cell receptor signaling, thereby influencing lymphocyte activation, differentiation, survival, and immune tolerance. CD5 is also commonly expressed in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, small lymphocytic lymphoma, and several T-cell malignancies, making it a useful marker and potential therapeutic target in immunology and hematological cancer research. |
